Mozilla Firefox version 5 is on the horizon, reflected by the recent changes in the browser implemented in Firefox Beta Version 9.0. The newest release of Firefox sports a slimmed down user interface that reflects the recent trend towards tabbed browsing ala Google Chrome. It seems that all the major browsers have followed suit in adopting a similar interface... so much for forward thinking and creativity. I guess this proves the evolutionary hypothesis that form follows function. However, this doesn't really change the crucial function of Firefox, mainly browsing the internet.

Firefox Beta 9.0 has made some changes to it's engine that help to enhance its browsing capabilities. Quoted from the Mozilla Blog, "Firefox 4 Beta now includes a streamlined Firefox Sync setup, making it easier to bring Awesome bar history, bookmarks, open tabs and passwords across your computers and smartphones. Based on your feedback, we've made it much easier to setup Firefox Sync while still securing your Firefox data with the same high-grade encryption." The Firefox Sync setup does work well, and is pretty simple to use. Like other major password services such as LassPass, Sxipper, RoboForms, etc. it creates a copy stored on a server so that you can sync your data to whatever system you are currently using. It works well but I still prefer the more robust features of LastPass which works with any browser and easily creates multiple login profiles for the same website. I actually prefer Sxipper but alas it is not compatible with Firefox Beta 9. This brings me to one of the big drawbacks to Beta 9, plugin and extension compatibility is not at all guaranteed.

Another feature added to the Beta 9 engine is its redesigned graphic capabilities. Mozilla opted to integrate the WebGL standard, supported by many modern graphics cards, in an effort to make it easier for designers to create games and web applications for Firefox, without the need to download a plugin. For those that don't know WebGL is a 3D standard that supports accelerated graphics. This will help Firefox to put some zip into some of those graphic intensive game and video sites. The Firefox Blog purports, "Combined with our previous work to bring open HTML5 technologies for animation, video, and sound to the Web, developers can now create amazing experiences that are rendered directly in the browser, combining themselves with live data from the Internet." For controlling tabs Firefox Beta 9.0 has added a feature known as Panorama. This feature allows you to switch to a page on which all of a users open tabs are displayed together, using the panorama button or by pressing CTRL + SPACE. Using this feature you can visually see your tabs and even reorganize, group or expand tabs at will.

you keep an eye on the weather anywhere in the world as

On July 19, 2007, I provided details on how to utilize these operators for more effective searching. Remembering these operators isn't exactly a simple task considering how many operators there are. However, Advanced Dork, which is a very slick Firefox add-on, assists you in recalling various Google search operators. Once Advanced Dork has been installed, highlight on a Web page, right-click it, and from the pop-up menu, choose Advanced Dork. This will cause a list of advanced operators to be displayed. Pick one and it will launch a Google search. Then you may update your search query, if needed. This particular add-on will enable you to perform searches through the Scroogle anonymizer, rather than utilizing Google as you normally would. What Scroogle actually does is allow you to use Google anonymously by acting as a proxy go-between. Scroogle prevents any personal information from being transmitted to Google when you run a search.

It acts as a screen through which the query passes and the results return. Currently, there are 18 various advanced operators that are supported by Advanced Dork. Others are available, but you must manually add them to your search queries.

Instructions

Open up a Firefox window.

Firefox web 3D engine fosters image theft bug

An industry standard graphics engine recently added to Mozilla's Firefox browser allows attackers to surreptitiously steal any image displayed on a Windows or Mac computer just by visiting a booby-trapped website, security researchers have warned. The vulnerability, reported Thursday by UK-based Context Information Security, is unique to Mozilla's implementation of the 3D-accelleration API known as WebGL, but researchers with the firm said it's related to serious design flaws in the cross-platform technology. The report comes five weeks after Context first warned of data-theft and denial-of-service threats in WebGL, which is also built into Google Chrome and developer versions of Opera and Apple's Safari.

Apple on Thursday announced that iPhones and iPads will offer limited support for the technology when iOS 5 is released later this year.

The report, coincidentally or otherwise, came the same day researchers from Microsoft's Security Research Center published a brief analysis titled "WebGL Considered Harmful" that concurred that it suffers from a variety of weaknesses that will be hard to fix.

"The security of WebGL as a whole depends on lower levels of the system, including OEM drivers, upholding security guarantees they never really need[ed] to worry about before," the Microsoft critique stated. "Attacks that may have previously resulted only in local elevation of privilege may now result in remote compromise. While it may be possible to mitigate these risks to some extent, the large attack surface exposed by WebGL remains a concern."

Microsoft products that implemented WebGL would have a tough time passing the company's rigorous Security Development Lifecycle, the analysis added. Microsoft has instead relied on a home-grown technology known as Direct3D to make graphics faster in its applications. A Context representative said Microsoft didn't commission the Context report. A Microsoft spokeswoman declined to say if Microsoft provided any support.

Exposing GPU memory to world+dog

The Context researchers have developed a proof-of-concept exploit that allows an attacker to steal images displayed on computers that do nothing more than use a current version of Firefox on a WebGL-enabled machine to browse a site with a malicious payload. The attack works by "spraying" memory in the computer's graphics card to collect data that's already been processed.

"The vulnerability we discovered enables any graphics image that has been displayed on the system to be stolen by an attacker by reading unitialised data from graphics memory," the Context report stated. "This is not limited to WebGL content but includes other web pages, a user's desktop and other applications." A video included with the report shows images from an encrypted session on LinkedIn.com being stolen from a computer running Apple's OS X. The exploit also works against PCs running Microsoft Windows.

A spokeswoman for Mozilla said the vulnerability will be fixed with the introduction of Firefox 5, due next week. A statement issued by representatives of Khronos, the firm that acts as the gatekeeper for the WebGL standard, said that the threat "is due to a bug in Firefox's WebGL implementation, and cannot be generalized across other browsers' WebGL implementations." The Context report raised other concerns about the security and stability of WebGL, including the failure of both Firefox and Chrome to pass a suite of conformance tests that prove their implementations adhere to official specifications.

"Between disparate platforms the browser must be exposing some aspect of the underlying graphics implementation to the web page for problems to arise, even if it is something trivial such as incorrect return values," the report concluded. The Context researchers also found problems in a previously-released extension designed to mitigate the effects of vulnerabilities that make it easy for websites to completely crash machines that have WebGL enabled. So far, only graphics cards made by NVidia support the GL_ARB_robustness extension, and even then it doesn't work on machines running Windows XP, the Context researchers claimed. Mozilla has responded with a forthcoming GL_ARB_robustness_2 extension, further calling into question the effectiveness of the current extension, they added.

The Khronos spokesman's statement said: "All browser vendors are still working toward passing the WebGL conformance suite. Only once they have successfully done so can they claim support of Canvas.getContext("webgl") instead of Canvas.getContext("experimental-webgl")." The statement continued: "Browser vendors are still in the process of supporting the GL_ARB_robustness extension, so it is expected that the previously reported denial-of-service issues are still present. It is expected that the reported denial-of-service issues will be solved with the integration of this extension."

Still in its adolescence

A Google spokesman said that Chrome doesn't run WebGL on some system configurations when lower level stack issues are identified and that many parts of WebGL, including the GPU process, run in separate processes that are sandboxed in the browser to help prevent the kinds of attacks described by Context.

Context researchers recommend users disable WebGL in both Firefox and Chrome, while the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team has suggested administrators review the Context findings and "update their systems as necessary to help mitigate the risks."

The two reports from Context, and the responses from Khronos, strongly suggest that WebGL is still in its adolescence and will require a more work among browser makers and hardware manufacturers for it to become mature. Disabling WebGL is probably an overreaction. Then again, at this early stage, users who turn it off probably aren't missing much. For those who decide to forgo the benefits of WebGL, Context's report provides step-by-step instructions for turning off the graphics-acceleration interface in both Firefox and Chrome.

First, close Firefox. Doing this while the browser is running will be disastrous.

Once it's closed, select Start, then Run, type (with the percentage signs) and press Navigate the resulting Windows Explorer window to (in other words, open the Mozilla folder inside your current location, then the Firefox folder inside that, and so on).

Now that you're in the Profiles folder, you'll see another folder with a random name and the extension .default--something like 4hw0enat.default. That's what you have to back up--that folder and all the files and folders inside it. Copy it to a safe location.

Here's how to restore it after you've bought a new PC or reinstalled Windows:

First, you'll have to install, run, and close Firefox on your new or newly setup PC. Then use the instructions above to find your new Firefox installation Profiles folder. Copy your old .default folder from the backup into that new Profiles folder.

You'll now have two .default folders in Profiles. With the one you just copied selected, press to rename it, to copy the name, then to not rename it, after all.

Move up the folder tree to the containing folder, which is called Firefox. Double-click the profiles.ini (Configuration Settings) file to open it in Notepad.

No longer is a beta, Google’s Chrome Web browser a capable contender to Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

Once a user gets over some of the foibles and differences from other browser interfaces (such as tabs at the very top of the window and no file menus), Google Chrome quickly begins to feel like the right way to surf the Web.

Microsoft preps to push IE 8; makes blocking tool available

As it has done with previous Internet Explorer (IE) releases, Microsoft has made available an IE 8 blocking toolkit to allow users to keep Microsoft’s browser from being downloaded automatically on their Windows machines.

In a January 6 posting to the Microsoft IE blog, company officials noted that Microsoft is planning to push the final IE 8 release via its Automatic Update (AU), Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update (MU) update systems. To keep the release from being pushed, customers can download the blocker toolkit from the Microsoft Download Center.

Unlike some previous versions of the toolkit, there is no expiration date on the latest blocker. The toolkit can be configured by running the registry file on client machines or via Group Policy, according to the IE 8 blog posting.

Once the final IE 8 bits are ready, Microsoft is planning to mark them as a top priority for distribution, officials said via the blog entry:
“The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important. For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, the update will be listed as High Priority. Delivery of IE8 via AU will begin after we make IE8 available from the Microsoft Download Center. Of course, users can always decline to install IE8 through AU when it is offered.”

Microsoft hasn’t provided a final release target date for IE 8, other than to say some time in 2009. Late last year, company officials acknowledged Microsoft would not be releasing the final version of IE 8 before the end of calendar 2008, as some company officials had claimed previously. Instead, Microsoft is planning to distribute in the first quarter of 2009 one more public test release, Release Candidate 1, before it rolls out the final IE 8.

I’m not sure if we’ll see RC 1 of IE 8 this week. While Microsoft is expected to release the official version of Windows 7 Beta 1 to private and public testers over course of the next three days, the build of IE8 that is part of Windows 7 Beta 1 is still Beta 2, company officials said on January 7. (The refreshed partner test build of IE 8 that Microsoft released privately in December was designated as “RC1″ but isn’t the official RC1 release, the Softies have said.)
When I asked earlier this week, Microsoft officials wouldn’t comment on when IE 8 RC1 would go live.

Firefox 3.1 beta 2 delayed, beta 3 now scheduled

The Mozilla team had decided to delay beta 2 and release a beta 3 in order to resolve bugs and garner more feedback before the early 2009 ship.

An “uncooperative tree” and 15 remaining bugs has delayed the release of beta 2, though developers are confident that number will be pared down to zero by the end of the day. Mozilla expected the code would freeze on November 4 and release shortly thereafter.

After beta 2 is released later this month, the team will focus on getting another beta out by the end of the December rather than issue a release candidate.

What’s slowing down the process is the addition of several new features to Beta 2 such as private browsing as ell as several new features introduced over the weekend, namely new Clear Recent History function, which allows a more fine grained history removal, a new “Forget About this Site” function, which removes records of a site, and a separate UI for clearing private data.

On the team’s weekly call today, lead developer Mike Beltzner noted that the number of bugs is increasing rather than decreasing as beta 2 development continues and suggested the code requires another beta cycle to ensure it is rock solid before a release candidate is issued. He said there were 78 blockers five weeks ago and now the number of blockers is up to 103.

The release of another beta also gives extensions developers more time to enable compatibility with the forthcoming browser update; to date, only about 25 percent of extensions have been determined to be compatible with FF 3.1.

About 150,000 people are testing beta 1 and that number is expected to double ith the release of Beta 2 this month.

He said a third beta cycle will impact the release timeframe but not by much because of the holiday break late next month.
“The impact on [the] shipping schedule won’t be as huge as some might think because we’re looking at dead time between December and January and so that time can be used to collect data before the milestone, RC1 or beta 3,” Beltzner said, before the team decided to go for a beta 3.

Firefox is an open source browser and the No 2 browser behind Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Firefox controls roughly 20 percent of market share, researchers indicated earlier this month.

The engineers at Mozilla have added a new feature to popular open-sourceWeb browser Firefox that many users felt was missing. Following in the steps of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome browsers, Firefox now has an enhanced privacy browsing mode affectionately known as "porn mode."

Released Monday night in the latest build of Minefield, adding porn mode to Firefox has long been in the queue for Firefox, even though the feature was not included in Firefox 3's initial release in June.

Porn mode, simply put, allows users to turn on the privacy feature in Firefox and not have the browser capture the latest URLs or cookies that you've visited on the Web. This means that some users can surf the Web for questionable content and not worry about anyone else sitting down at the machine and sussing out what you've been looking at.

This isn't the first time that Firefox users have been able to surf the Web without leaving cookies or a history in the browser. In fact, Stealthier has long been available as a plug-in for Firefox. The difference, however, is that porn mode is now natively built into the browser, which means a plug-in is no longer required.

It's likely that a privacy browsing mode will be built into Firefox 3.1, along with enhanced privacy features and performance features.

Mozilla has been having a good week all around. Earlier in the week the makers of Firefox announced that they had crossed 20 percent of Web browser market share for the first time, according to NetApplications. The uptick in Firefox's popularity comes at the expense of Microsoft's Web browsing share, which has declined.

The Firefox crew is rightly excited about crossing the 20 percent threshold because it shows that a small, open-source company can play on the same field as the big corporations. And right now, Mozilla is taking it to Microsoft on its own turf—and though they've added a new layer of privacy, Firefox is doing it right out in the open.

Firefox hits record market share

Firefox has been playing with the 20% market share mark for some time now. Back in July, the browser has begun jumping over 20% on several days and this trend has solidified since then. In October, Firefox’ average market share according to Net Applications was 19.97%, up 0.51 points from 19.46% in September.

Internet Explorer (IE) dropped from 71.52% to 71.27%, according to Net Applications, and remains the software with the fastest declining market share among a group of the six most used browsers. Since the beginning of this year, IE lost 4.2 points, while Firefox gained 2.99 points, Apple Safari 0.75 points, Opera 0.13 points and Google’s Chrome 0.74 points.

The only other browsers that gained market share between September and October was Opera, which jumped from 0.69% to 0.75%. Apple’s Safari dropped slightly from 6.65 to 6.57%, Chrome from 0.78% to 0.74% and Netscape from 0.63% to 0.45%, according to Net Applications.

In terms of operating systems, Net Applications found that Windows usage increased from 90.29% to 90.46% in October, while the presence of Macs declined from8.23% to 8.21%, Linux dropped from 0.91% to 0.71% and Apple’s iPhone showed an increase from 0.32% to 0.33%.

This is a relief, since Firefox 2.0 was more than a little disappointing. It got to the point where Arlene (my trusty assistant) and I couldn't recommend 2.0. This left us in a bit of a quandary. Internet Explorer is a kluge.

Although I consider IE version 7 far superior to version 6, it falls short of the speedy, secure, lightweight Web browser that Firefox promised with its initial offerings.

When Firefox 2.0 was released, there was excitement in the air; however, it proved to be unstable, which has been attributed to memory leaks. Firefox, I am willing to forgive and forget, especially because you did right with version 3.0. I am happy to talk about it and recommend it.

First, this has been the fastest install I've ever known. In a world where software installation means downloading the software, connecting to the Internet, checking the authenticity and only then starting the install, the quick install is appreciated.

Second, you'll notice the slickly designed user interface. Hands down, aside from not crashing, this is my favorite thing. There are things that make sense, like the back button doesn't light up unless you have a Web page to go back to. These are small but intuitive improvements that make me happy.

Maybe I lied. My favorite aspect is the speed of Firefox 3.0. Things are loading much faster. Firefox attributes that to its new Gecko 1.9 platform and a handy memory application that monitors and cleans up unused memory.

You don't care? Me neither. It's fast, and that's all I need to know.

Support for online applications is another great improvement. It's now possible to choose a Web-based e-mail site (i.e.: hotmail, gmail, yahoo) to open when you double click on a Web site.

The Tab Mix Plus extension has a gem of a feature buried deep within the settings: The ability to turn the Ctrl+Tab key from a direct tab switch into a popup menu that works similarly to the Windows Alt+Tab feature. It'll pop up a tiny dialog window that gives you a list of your tabs, and then on release of the keys will switch to that tab.

I've been using this for a while, but I only realized it's one of those things I can't live without when I actually had to go without it for a few minutes earlier…

To turn on this setting, open up Tab Mix Plus Options, click on Events and then the Tab Features tab. You'll see a checkbox titled "Ctrl-Tab displays a tab list popup menu" which you'll want to select.

Just try it for a while… if you use as many tabs as I do, you'll want to always keep this setting on.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes Firefox isn't very responsive while loading a page? As a frequent StumbleUpon user, this behavior grates on my nerves so I went looking for a solution.

When Firefox is loading a page it uses one of two modes: There's a high priority mode that doesn't pay as much attention to your mouse and keyboard, but loads the page faster. There's also a lower priority mode that interrupts the parser more often to respond to input events. It's even documented at Mozillazine.

What we can do is tweak the amount of time before Firefox switches from lower priority mode back into high priority mode.

Type about:config into the Firefox address bar, and then filter by the following:

content.switch.threshold

Most likely the key doesn't exist yet, so you'll have to set it by right-clicking in the empty area and selecting New \ Integer. Use these values when prompted:

Key Name: content.switch.threshold
Key Value: 1000000

The default value is 750000, or 3/4 of a second. The more time that you tell Firefox to wait before resuming high priority mode, the more responsive the application will feel… but it will obviously take a little longer to load the pages. You could reverse this if you were more worried about speeding up page load time.

Sometimes when we make changes in our preferences or configurationin Firefox, are not saved or remembered by the Browser. Following are the Conditions in which the Browser may not remember tha changes made by you:

Changes that you made to your toolbars do not appear when you restart Firefox.
Changes made to the browser window's size and position are not remembered when you restart Firefox.
Firefox 2:

You cannot save bookmarks.

Cause

These symptoms or errors are caused by a corrupted file, in your Firefox user data, called localstore.rdf. This file is maintained by Firefox to manage some of your local configuration information.

Fixing the problem

To repair this issue, the localstore.rdf file must be deleted. When Firefox is restarted, the file is automatically recreated. This issue can be fixed by using either of the following methods.

No bookmarks are deleted or changed by these methods.

Note: If you have customized your toolbars, any unsaved changes are lost when you complete this fix and restart Firefox. Before you delete the localstore.rdf file, you may find it useful to take note of what you have on your toolbar.

Method 1: Using Safe Mode

Close down Firefox completely: At the top of the Firefox window, click the File menu, and select the Exit menu item.Firefox menu, and select the Quit Firefox menu item.File menu, and select the Quit menu item.
In Windows, click Start, open the All Programs list, and navigate to the Mozilla Firefox folder. In the Mozilla Firefox folder, select Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode).Firefox 3, Mac OS:

Hold down the Option key, as you start Firefox.

Firefox 2, Mac OS:

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode

Go to your Terminal and run:/path/to/firefox/firefox -safe-mode

Firefox should start up with a Firefox Safe Mode dialog.

Note: You can also start Firefox in Safe Mode by clicking Start, selecting Run (or use the Start Search box in Windows Vista) and then entering the following in the text field:
firefox -safe-mode

In the Firefox Safe Mode window, select Reset toolbars and controls.
Click Make Changes and Restart.

Method 2: Delete localstore.rdf manually

Caution: This method removes the copy of localstore.rdf in the profile folder. Do not delete the localstore.rdf copy in the Firefox program installation folder by mistake!

From the menu at the top of the Firefox windowbar, select FileFirefox and then select the ExitQuit FirefoxQuit menu item.
Go to your profile folder.
In the folder, delete the file localstore.rdf.

Did you know that you can run more than one Firefox profile at once? This can be extremely useful if you want to test out extensions more easily, create a web development profile, run a slimmed down profile just for Gmail, or if you just want to have a clean profile.
The first thing you'll need to do is create a new profile. You'll need to run the following from a run dialog or command prompt, adjusting the path if necessary.
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -profilemanager
Create an extra profile by using the Create Profile wizard, and make sure that each profile has a distinct name. You'll also want to leave the "Don't ask at startup" box checked.
The next thing you'll want to do is make another shortcut to Firefox. You can just copy/paste the current shortcut if you feel like it, then open up the properties page and go to the Shortcut tab.
Add the following to the end of the Target box. As you can see, my profile was named Geek, so that's what I used.
-P PROFILENAME -no-remote
Now on the second shortcut, which I suggest you give a relevant name to, go into the same place except use the profile name for the secondary profile. Make sure you use the -no-remote option!
Now you should be able to use either shortcut to open a new Firefox window specific to that profile. Extensions, bookmarks, themes, will all be specific to the profile, and a new profile will start off at default.

I prefer the built-in search box to the full Google Toolbar, but I miss having the PageRank easily visible when I'm browsing around without the Google Toolbar enabled. Sure, you can have it installed and hidden, but then you have to reload the page for the pagerank to show up after you unhide the toolbar.
I'm going to assume if you've read this far that you also have the Google Toolbar for Firefox installed.
To use this extremely quick tip, just right-click anywhere on the toolbars, choose Customize, and then drag the PageRank button somewhere else:
I moved mine beside the address bar, but still easily visible.
Only three clicks required for this and you cant find there many other options which are useful…Like you can change the position of other options in the bar and can add some more features on your toolbar like ….google calender , google maps and many other such options.

If you've started using the beta of Firefox 3, you've probably already seen the new Smart Bookmarks folder that is created by default. This folder can be useful for looking up sites you just visited or bookmarked… but how do you get it back if you accidentally deleted it?
Luckily there's a simple about:config tweak that will restore it, requiring almost no work at all.
In case you aren't sure what we're talking about, here's the default Smart Bookmarks folder, which dynamically shows you the "Most Visited", "Recently Bookmarked" and "Recent Tags" bookmarks:

Type about:config into the address bar, accept the warning message, and then filter by the following:
browser.places.createdSmartBookmarks

You should see a single entry in the list with a default value of true. Double-click on it to set the value to false, restart Firefox, and your Smart Bookmarks folder is now back:

Nice and simple, just the way it should be.

Turn off Prefetching in Firefox

Firefox has a spooky feature called "Prefetching" that downloads pages that it thinks you are going to click on. (note: this is a good excuse for how those pages ended up in your history). It's also a waste of CPU and bandwidth that slows Firefox down.
To turn off this behavior, type about:config into the address bar, and then type the following into the Filter bar:
network.prefetch-next
Just double-click the item in the list to change it to false.

I'm not a fan of wasted space in user interfaces, so any time I can consolidate down to only useful functionality I'm happy about it. The subject today is how to consolidate the Firefox toolbars down to just the items we actually use, to save space for the 45 tabs I like to have open.
Hide the Menu Toolbar with Personal Menu Extension
There are a number of ways to hide the Menu toolbar, but I prefer using the Personal Menu extension. Once you've installed the extension, you'll be able to hide the menus toolbar:
To show the menu toolbar again you can use the Alt key. You'll also notice that some new items will be added to your menu, which can be customized or just removed.
Combine Bookmarks Toolbar & Navigation Toolbar
You might already know this, but you can move the bookmarks from the Bookmarks toolbar and onto any other toolbar. Right-click on the menu and choose Customize…
Then click and drag the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" to another toolbar… I chose to move them to the Navigation toolbar.
Now you'll be able to hide the Bookmarks Toolbar.
If you hide the Status bar via the View menu, you'll end up with an extremely streamlined browser.

I often find the need to open my current tab into a separate window so that I can move it to my second monitor. Tab Mix Plus to the rescue! There's an option in the settings panel to easily duplicate the current tab in a new window. You can use it from a keyboard shortcut as well if you want.
Notice the new option for "Duplicate in New Window" when I right-click a tab. You can also use the shortcut key of Ctrl+Shift+N whether you enable this menu option or not.
To add the item to the right-click menu, go to the Tab Mix Plus Options screen, click on the Menu button at the top, and then Tab Context Menu.
In here, you can click the "Duplicate in New Window" checkbox to enable the menu item.

If you frequently download files from suspicious sites, it's probably worth it to check for viruses Before you download, instead of waiting to see if your regular anti-virus software will catch it after you download.
It is very simple to check … You can use the Dr.Web plugin, which will add an item to the right-click menu to allow you to scan any web page or download link using their online virus checker.
Let's check it out… I decided to scan the Dr.Web Firefox plugin with Dr.Web, just to see what it would display.
Keep in mind that no anti-virus software is absolutely perfect or will catch every virus, so don’t take this as a proper anti-virus software this isn't a substitute for it. You should be careful about from where you download files.
This plugin will not work for webmail attachments. I tested this on yahoomail and as well as on Gmail and it didn't work, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, because it means your attachments are private.

How often do you find a great article without the time to read it, so you bookmark it and completely forget about it? This happened to me constantly until I found the Readeroo extension for Firefox, which lets me queue pages for easy retrieval later.

Once you install the extension you'll notice a new button with a plus sign on it. This button will let you silently add the current page to del.icio.us with a tag of "toread" (customizable)

The first time you click the button you'll be prompted to login to del.icio.us.

It takes a few minutes sometimes for the tooltip on the Readeroo button to appear, but normally it will tell you how many items are left to be read.

Click on the button and you'll get the next item in the queue… it's just as simple as that.

One of my favorite features in Windows Vista is the taskbar thumbnail previews, especially now that they can be resized. If you would like this functionality for Firefox's tabs, you can use the Tab Scope extension to give you a similar feature.

When you hover your mouse over a tab, a popup preview window will show up with a thumbnail of the page. Remember that you can actually interact with these thumbnails, links are clickable and you can use the scroll mouse button.

You can easily change the size of the popup preview as well by using the Tab Scope Options under Tools \ Addons. The default size is quite small, but you can make the previews as large or small as you like it to be.

I would recommend changing the wait time up a bit, otherwise the popups will annoy you as you try and mouse over the interface.

Yesterday I was wondering how to change Firefox so that Shift+Enter auto-completes *.org instead of *.net. After about a 2 minute google session, I had to find the answer to share with everybody.

About:Config Tweak

To adjust the built-in Ctrl+Enter setting, you can just set some values in the Firefox configuration to change the default from .com to whatever else you want. If you want to change Shift+Ctrl+Enter then you'll have to skip down to the next section.

Navigate to about:config in your address bar, and then filter by browser.fixup as shown here:

There are a couple of values that you can set related to this setting:

browser.fixup.alternate.enabled - You can use this to turn the Ctrl+Enter behavior off entirely.
browser.fixup.alternate.prefix - This value sets the prefix assigned before the keyword you type.
browser.fixup.alternate.suffix - This value sets what is assigned after the keyword. For instance, you could use this to change the default suffix to your country code, like .co.uk

Use the URL Suffix Extension

If you want to configure all of the settings, including the Shift+Enter for .net and the Ctrl+Shift+Enter for .org, you can use the URL Suffix extension to configure all of them, or even set a custom value for when you hit Enter in the address bar.

Install the extension, and then open up the options through the add-ons screen. You'll see this easy to use dialog:

If you make any changes, you can view them immediately.

If you accidentally checked the wrong box while installing Skype, you now are the proud recipient of an extension in Firefox that you can't uninstall. Sure, you can disable it… but what about uninstalling it?

You could completely uninstall Skype, and then reinstall it without checking the button, but there's a simpler (and more geeky) method.

Removing Skype Extension Manually

The first thing you want to do is go into Tools \ Add-ons and disable the extension if you haven't already. You'll notice that there's no uninstall option, which is rather irritating… Skype is very useful, but it shouldn't pollute my Firefox.

Now close Firefox and open up a Windows Explorer window and browse down to the following location, adjusting if you installed Firefox somewhere else:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions

In that folder you'll find another folder with the following name:

{B13721C7-F507-4982-B2E5-502A71474FED}

Just delete that folder (or move it somewhere else if you want to be safe), and then open Firefox again. You'll notice that the Skype extension is no more.

You've already seen them… links to tinyurl.com left in comments, on blog posts and especially on Twitter. But doesn't it make you slightly uneasy to click on a link without knowing where it's going to take you?

There's a feature on the TinyURL.com site that will show you a preview of the final destination URL, and there's not even a login required… it just sets a cookie on your browser.

Once on the site, just click the link for "Click here to enable previews"

And now when you click on a TinyUrl link like this one…

You'll be taken to a page on tinyurl.com that will show you the final destination link.

If you'd like to ensure that the person you are sending links to will see the preview screen even if they haven't enabled this setting, you can add preview. before the domain name. This also works if you want to go to a TinyUrl link on a machine that doesn't already have the cookies enabled.

If you're the type of person that always allows Firefox to save your login credentials for the sites you visit, you might be very frustrated when you come across a site that doesn't even prompt you to save the credentials. We've got the lowdown on what's going on here.

Here's that awful form I have to type into almost every day… I'm really getting tired of it.

So I take a look into the source for the page, and here's the culprit: the AUTOCOMPLETE="off" on the form will tell Firefox to disable auto completing for that form. The form elements themselves also have the same tag on them.

You'll find this happens quite often on corporate vpns, banks, and other sites where they are worried about security and don't want you to save your passwords, so they use this tag in their pages to prevent your browser from saving the credentials.

Your Best Option: Greasemonkey it!

You can use a greasemonkey script to re-enable the autocomplete on the form elements. You can find a number of them at userscripts.org:

Or you can write your own if you feel like it… for some reason the other scripts did not work on my screwy corporate vpn at work, so I created a new script that manually set the attributes of each.

One of the more annoying things about visiting blogs is having to fill out all the comment fields. They are the same on every blog (including this one). Sure, you can hit the down arrow key and Firefox might remember what you typed last, but it's still a pain, especially as a blogger when you want to leave a lot of comments.

A much simpler way is to use an application to fill out the fields for you. I've chosen the Texter application, just because it's the latest software that I've been playing with.

Download and install the software, and go through the tutorial on the download page. Once you've got it installed, hit Ctrl+Shift+H to bring up the Add new hotstring dialog, and enter the following, making sure to set the dropdown to "Script", or else it won't replace the {Tab} with an actual tab key.

You'll want to give it a unique hotstring, something that you wouldn't need to use in other applications. I chose wp1.

So now just type in wp1 into the name field in any comments box:

Hit the tab key, and you should see it auto-fill in the fields, and position the cursor in the comment box so you can write a personalized comment.

This tool is unbelievably useful.

If you are a fan of the Live Bookmarks feature, you might wonder how to make them update quicker since the default update time is once per hour, and there isn't a place in the interface to configure this.

You can always manually right-click on the bookmark and choose Reload Live Bookmark, but that's hardly efficient if you have dozens of feeds bookmarked.

You can change the default interval for all live bookmarks with a config setting. Just type about:config into the address bar, and then filter by the following key:

browser.bookmarks.livemark_refresh_seconds

If it doesn't exist, which is most likely the case, then right-click in the blank area and choose New \ Integer.

Copy in the key from above as the name, and then set the default value to 1800, which is 30 minutes in seconds.

The default value used internally is 3600 if the setting does not exist. You should be careful about not setting this value too low, as you might get banned by the server you are trying to connect to if you have the browser updating too often. The minimum value accepted is 60 seconds, but you should never set it that low.

When I switched to Vista, one of the biggest annoyances was that Trillian started opening links in Internet Explorer instead of Firefox, even though Firefox is set as my default browser and works everywhere else.

Turns out it's an extremely simple setting. Just open Trillian Preferences and click on Text Conversations.

In this dialog, uncheck the option for "Open links in a new browser window"

I have to assume that Trillian uses some sort of built-in "new browser" mechanism that isn't compatible with Vista.

Add Sticky Notes to Any Page with Internote for Firefox

How many times have you wanted to put a sticky note on a page to remind you of something? For instance, you could put a sticky note on digg.com so the next time you visit it tells you that you should really be doing something more productive. =)

The Internote extension for Firefox lets you put sticky notes on any page you visit, and they will be there when you return to the page. Since it's an extension, it won't work across computers, but it's still quite useful.

Once you install the extension, you'll notice the little yellow icon in the status bar. You can also add a bigger icon to the toolbar if you want. Clicking once will give you a new sticky note, and right-clicking will give you the menu where you can get to the manager.

In the Internote manager, you can see the list of all the sticky notes that you've left, and change/export them.

Really a quite useful extension, and it even has a little eye candy.

The solution? You can use the Dr.Web plugin, which will add an item to the right-click menu to allow you to scan any web page or download link using their online virus checker.

Let's take it for a test drive… I decided to scan the Dr.Web Firefox plugin with Dr.Web, just to see what it would say.

Looks like it's clean! (shocker)

Keep in mind that no anti-virus software is absolutely perfect or will catch every virus, so this isn't a substitute for using a proper anti-virus software. You should also still be careful where you download files from.

This plugin will also not work for webmail attachments. I tested this on Gmail and it didn't work, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, because it means your attachments are private.

If you like to have your entire computing experience within your Firefox window, you might be interested in accessing your POP email accounts directly in Firefox. The Simple Mail extension gives you this functionality, and true to the name it's very simple.

After installation, you should notice the little mail icon in the status bar, which will highlight and display an unread count if there are new messages, but first you'll want to right-click it and open the preferences to add your new account.

Here you can add a new account or import from Thunderbird (a feature I did not test)

Left-clicking on the mail icon will open the mail client interface, nothing more than a two-paned display of the messages sitting on your server. You can choose to delete the individual message through the right-click menu.

The new or reply up options bring the new email dialog, which is also really simple.

Somebody recently wrote in asking how to backup the list of saved passwords in Firefox into a spreadsheet, so I'm writing the solution here for everybody: All you need is the Password Exporter extension.

Open up the Add-ons screen and find Password Exporter in the list, where you can click the Options button to bring up the Import/Export Passwords dialog.

You can either import or export your passwords using this dialog, and you can choose to encrypt them if you want.

You can export in either XML or CSV format. If you are trying to create a spreadsheet with all your passwords the CSV file would be a better choice.

Just be very careful with the list of passwords you exported.

Make Firefox Display Large Images Full Size

Firefox resizes large images by default to fit in the browser window. This can get really annoying if you are browsing a lot of large images.

To see this in action, you can click the link to the really nice Ubuntu wallpaper. You'll notice that you have to click on the image to show the full size version.

To change this setting, follow these steps:

Type about:config into the address bar in firefox.
Type in browser.enable in the Filter bar and hit enter

Expand the Add Bookmark Dialog in Firefox by Default

If you are reading this article you are probably annoyed that every single time you add a bookmark in Firefox you have to click on the expand button to show the folder list before you can actually locate the folder to put the bookmark in.

There are two solutions that I've found to make Firefox expand this dialog by default, one is an extension and the other is a Stylish script, so we'll go over both solutions.

Using the OpenBook Extension

Download and install the OpenBook extension from Mozilla Add-ons, and after rebooting Firefox you'll see that the bookmark dialog is now open by default:

There are also a bunch more useful options available in the ridiculously tall Options window:

The most interesting thing here is that you can set Firefox to automatically bookmark into a particular folder by selecting the "Add bookmark to folder below" option.

Using Stylish Tweak Method

If you're a fan of the Stylish extension you'd probably prefer to just add another user style instead of a separate extension. You won't get the extra features, but it does save you some extension bloat.

It's as simple as installing the Add Bookmark Dialog user style… click the button to load into Stylish:

And now you'll see that the default dialog is changed. You can customize the width / height in the script if you'd like, which is something you can't do with the OpenBook extension.

Disabling The Stylish Tweak

Because this user style is for the user interface, it won't show up in the regular Stylish popup, so you'll have to go into Manage Styles.

You should see the "Add Bookmark Dialog" style in the list, and just remove the check from the left of it.

Don't forget that you can just drag bookmarks straight off the address bar and onto the bookmarks bar, which is really the simplest option.

When you spend a lot of time in front of your computer, many small actions performed repeatedly can add up to a lot of wasted time. The worst of these small offenders is the copy and paste… so how can we simplify this in Firefox?

The AutoCopy extension will automatically copy to the clipboard any text you select, and allow you to paste it with a middle click anywhere in Firefox.

All you have to do is select the text you want to copy, and it will be copied to the clipboard right away.

You'll notice the new icon in the status bar, which will let you change a few options or open up the full options panel.

There's lots more options in the options panel… you'll notice the keyboard shortcut options as well.

Once you get used to this extension, you'll wonder how you lived without it

I use del.icio.us to store all of my infrequently used bookmarks, but I've found that browsing by tag just isn't very efficient for me. I always use a full text search through my bookmarks to find what I'm looking for, so what I'm really looking for is a single-click save solution similar to the star button on the Flock browser.

Greasemonkey comes to the rescue with the del.icio.us autotag user script, but the problem is that you can't edit the bookmarks by clicking on the del.icio.us tag button, because that script always immediately submits the form, and also duplicates the tags.

I've created an upgrade to the script that fixes those problems. Just like the first script, it will automatically add the popular and recommended tags:

Here's the details:

Automatically enters in popular or recommended tags, submits the form and closes the pop-up window.
If the bookmark has already been saved, it will leave the edit window as is.
Doesn't duplicate the tags if you use the tag button more than once.

I simply couldn't live without this script, but I wouldn't recommend using it if you like to browse by tag.

Add Search Forms to the Firefox Search Bar

Wouldn't it be cool if you could add search plugins for any search form to the Firefox Search Bar, instead of having to create the plugin yourself or wait for the site owner to stop being lazy and make one?

It's good that there's an extension for Firefox called Add to Search Bar that will add a new context menu item to let you create your own search plugins on the fly.

For instance, you can right-click on the search box here and then choose Add to Search Bar…

You'll be prompted to give it a name, I chose to shorten the site title down a bit.

And there we go, now I can search anything from Firefox.

I've tested this on a number of sites, seems to work pretty well… at some point I'll stop being lazy and make an official search plugin.

If you like to subscribe to feeds using Firefox's Live Bookmarks feature, the LiveClick extension gives you so many upgrades that I can only cover the highlights of how great it is.

On the left: Firefox's wimpy Live Bookmarks. On the right: Upgraded and powerful LiveClick bookmarks!

Now that we've set the bookmark to monitor, we'll get a notification right above the system tray whenever a new item shows up in the feed.

Opening up the LiveClick options gives you a world of settings to play with, including my favorite: Middle-click opens location in a new tab.

The Menus tab gives another option that makes me thrilled… favicons instead of livemark icons. I keep my live bookmarks in their own folder, so why not see the icon of the site instead of the same redundant icon?

In order to make sure that the Open Location function works, there's a new item in the properties for each bookmark: Location. Here's where you can set the location of the site itself separately from the feed.

If you are using Live bookmarks, this is pretty much a must-have.

If you are working on editing a bunch of bookmarks at the same time, you've already noticed the pain of having to click on a bookmark and then click Properties, and then edit the details in a popup dialog… and then close that and repeat for the next bookmark.

There's a much better way to edit the bookmarks, by using the Flat Bookmark Editor extension, which eliminates all the popup dialog editing.

When you open up the Bookmarks Manager, now you'll see a new panel at the bottom where you can easily edit the selected bookmark.

You can turn the new panel on/off by using the View \ Properties menu item, or hitting the Ctrl+P shortcut.

Note that this extension won't be useful in Firefox 3 because of the redesigned "Places" feature.

If you allow Firefox to store your passwords you might be worried about the recent security holes found in the password manager. The solution to these problems is to use the Secure Login extension to prevent Firefox from automatically filling in password fields, but at the same time giving you the automation that saves you time. In fact, using the hotkey means that this method is probably even quicker.

The regular Firefox password manager will automatically fill in the password fields for you, which gives malicious sites and hackers the chance to use javascript to read the password.

Using the Secure Login extension, you'll see these golden bars around the login credentials instead, but it won't fill in the fields automatically.

Jjust click the Secure Login button and the form will be filled and automatically submitted.

You can also use the keyboard shortcut Alt+N (customizable) to login even faster.

The button isn't automatically added to your toolbar after installing the extension, but it's easy to add: just right-click over the back/forward buttons and choose Customize Toolbar. You'll find the Secure Login button in the list.

The preferences have a lot of other options as well, like not automatically submitting the form when you click the button if you don't like that behavior. You can even customize the highlight color around the login elements.

Tab Mix Plus

Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox's tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more. It also includes a full-featured session manager with crash recovery that can save and restore combinations of opened tabs and windows.

To set this option, you must have the Tab Mix Plus extension installed. Assuming you do, open up the Tab Mix Plus options dialog via the Tools menu.

Choose the Display tab/icon on the top, and then make sure you have the Tab Bar tab selected.

Change the option for "When tabs don't fit width" to "Multi-row", and then check out the multiple-row goodness.

Its very easy to install and use.

Create a TinyUrl the Easy Way in Firefox

Have you ever tried to email or IM somebody a link from a site that has ridiculously long URLs, only to have the link break because it was too long or got cut off? The solution to this problem is to use a service like TinyUrl that turns a really long link into a really short link.

If you find yourself using this feature all the time, then you need the TinyUrl Creator extension for Firefox, which makes it very easy to not only create TinyUrls, but access the ones that you've already created.

Once installed, just right-click on any link, and choose "Create TinyURL for this Page".

With the default settings you'll get a popup confirmation that tells you the new link has been copied to your clipboard.

If you click the Save button, you can save the new TinyURL into Firefox. Note that this doesn't save as a bookmark, it saves in the extension's saved panel.

To view TinyURLs that you have previously saved, go to Tools \ TinyUrl Creator \ View Saved.

Here you can see the list of saved links, and then copy the TinyURL to your clipboard. This is extremely useful for links that you need to use often.

If you don't want the confirmation dialog every time you create a link, you can go into the TinyUrl options panel and check the box for "Do not show confirmation dialog upon TinyUrl creation".

With all of the features in this extension, it makes dealing with TinyUrl virtually simple and easy.
